KLM Open hots-up with tasty mix of Europeans in pursuit
A 66 on Saturday has given the golfing star from Thailand, Kiradech Aphibarnrat a one-shot lead going into the final round of the KLM Open in Spijk. His round of 5-under par was brilliantly wrapped-up with a birdie at the par-5 final hole. Today the 28-year old from Bangkok tees-off at The Dutch in search of his fourth European Tour title with two Frenchmen: Romain Wattel (-13) and Joel Stalter (-12) hot on his heels.
Known for his ‘go-for-broke’ style of play, Aphibarnrat could well pull-off a stunning victory at The Dutch on Sunday. Gone are the storms that have thwarted play all week. Sun and good crowds are expected to line the fairways, and at the end of the day, who knows, the fans may even be witness to the crowning of the first ever Asian Dutch Open Champion.
There is also a mass of hungry Europeans in the mix, however. As well as the Frenchmen Stalter and Wattel, who shot a brilliant best round of the day 7-under par 64 on Saturday, Aphibarnrat has a seriously on-form past winner to contend with: Lee Westwood. The Englishman is tucked in three shots off the pace with Joakim Lagergren (Sweden) and Sebastian Heisele (Germany).
Others eager for victory who are lurking near the top of the leaderboard in a tie for 7th place on 9-under par are Matteo Manassero from Italy, George Coetzee and Justin Walters (South Africa), and young Austin Connelly from Canada who celebrates his 21st birthday tomorrow. Victory in the Dutch Open Championship would sure make for an amazing birthday present.
Flying the Dutch flag
Scrolling down the leaderboard, you soon realise just how many different nationalities and how much talent is waiting in the wings. Seasoned players as well as the fresh and fearless, all ready to pounce should the leaders happen to collapse under pressure.
Dutch fans have the added local interest of players like Wil Besseling (70,69,70), Daan Huizing (69,71,72) and Max Albertus (69,70,73) flying the red, white and blue flag for Holland on Sunday.
Enjoy the final day’s play in Spijk!
