Twenty years on an Englishman follows in Faldo’s footsteps

The tough closing holes at Augusta National finally took their toll on defending Masters Champion, Jordan Spieth. Just when you thought it was going to be plane sailing for the 22-year old American golfing genius, who had led the 80th edition of The Masters from day one, his wheels came off, big time.  It was an Englishman, 28- year old Danny Willett from Yorkshire, who was there at the right moment poised to raise his game should the World Number Two happen to falter.  Level par at the start of the final day’s play at Augusta, Willett came from three behind Spieth to sneak the Masters title and Green Jacket from under the Texan’s nose.  He shot a life-changing final round of 67 to get to 5-under par for the tournament finishing an unbelievable three shots clear of Jordan Spieth who eventually tied for second place with another Englishman, Lee Westwood.

 

Willett becomes the first Englishman to win The Masters in 20 years. He follows in the footsteps of Sir Nick Faldo who claimed his third Green Jacket in 1996.

 

Danny Willett won the 2016 Masters with a score of 283 (70-74-72-67) for which he was richly rewarded with a cheque for 1.8 million dollars and a place in the history books of The Masters.
