Kevin Kisner leads the way at Quail Hollow
Olympic Golf Champion, Justin Rose from England admits that his fellow athletes in Team GB inspired him to victory in Rio in 2016. As golfers tee-off in the final round of the US PGA Championship today, I’m wondering just how much inspiration the likes of Rory McIlroy and Paul Casey will have gathered from Great Britain & Ireland’s Gold and Silver Medals won in the 4 x 100-metre relay at the World Athletics Championships in London yesterday. What a thrilling night of action it was!
First the girls ran a glorious race for Silver followed by an even more surprising Gold Medal for the guys. GB’s Gold in the relay was partly due to the Fastest Man in the World, Usain Bolt dramatically pulling a hamstring during the last 100 metres of the race – sadly the Jamaican’s last competitive race, ever. All credit to team GB though who kept their focus running a dream race with the slickest of baton changes setting a new European record of 37.47 seconds. Indeed, the third fastest time worldwide.
A little earlier, Sir Mo Farah had taken to the track. The legendary long-distance runner was looking to add another golden double to his collection at the World Athletics Championships in the last official race of his outstanding career yet had to settle for Silver in the men’s 5,000m. It was an emotional moment. The 60,000-strong crowd were with him every step of the way.
Time to get back to the golf
Today is your last chance to experience the thrill of the World Athletics Championships, by the way. Once the athletics are all done and dusted, you can tune into your favourite golf programme for the exciting final round of the 99th edition of the US PGA Championship – the last Major of the season. Alas, Justin Rose did not survive the halfway cut at Quail Hollow GC in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Olympic Champion missed the cut by one along with English compatriot Ross Fisher. Holland’s Joost Luiten was one shot further adrift.
Leading the way on the final day is America’s Kevin Kisner who at 7-under par has a one-shot lead over fellow countryman Chris Stroud and Hideki Matsuyama (Japan). Europe’s best hope lies with the Italian Francesco Molinari who tees-off today five off the pace. Paul Casey was sitting pretty after two rounds at 3-under par, but a 74 on day three cost the Englishman dearly.
Enjoy a thrilling Sunday of sport!
