Englishman shoots 62 in end of season peak
What an inspiration! Englishman Lee Slattery opened with a devastating round of 75 in the Omega European Masters in Switzerland (7-10 September) yet managed to keep a clear head in the mountains at Crans-sur-Sierre GC. On day two, the 39-year old from Southport followed-up with a cool 8-under par 62 in Crans Montana to see his name soar 100 places up the leaderboard.
His six bogeys on day one were replaced by six birdies on the back nine alone on day two. Slattery came home in 30 with just the one blemish on his card – a bogey at the par-three, 235-yard 16th. He had started his second round well too with three lovely birdies to go out in 32. After that, his putter just got hotter and hotter.
While Australia’s Scott Hend and Matthew Fitzpatrick (England) were battling it out for the title amidst delays caused by poor weather, Slattery continued his ascent. He closed out with a four-under par 68 followed by a delightful 66 on Sunday. It was quite a week for Slattery. On Friday, he could barely keep a three off his card. In fact, he made nine threes and one two! Then on Sunday his 66 included six birdies to finish, rather appropriately, in a share of sixth place.
The amiable Slattery seems to peak around this time of year. Not only in the mountains, but also in the lowlands. In 2015, a week after his second European Tour victory in Russia, he got one hand on the Dutch Open trophy at the Kennemer G&CC in Holland only to have it snatched away from him by the young Belgian, Thomas Pieters on the final green. Two weeks ago, the Englishman came second in the D+D Real Czech Masters in Prague giving him three top-10 finishes in his last four events.
Keep up the good season, Slats!
