Married bliss on European Senior Tour
Behind every great player, there is an important person on the bag: the caddie. More and more often on the senior pro tours these days that trusted position is filled by the player’s wife or girlfriend. We had a charming encounter with one such caddie at The Dutch Masters: Sharon Eales. The two-handicap golfer enjoyed a terrific week with her 54-year old husband Paul in Holland. Indeed the English couple were a whisker away from clinching the title at The Dutch GC in Spijk (6-8 October).
Golf runs pretty well through the veins in her family, she admits. “My father had his own little bunker in the garden”. Yet it wasn’t until she was at university that she finally took up the game. Sharon talks with Wendy Hoad about their new lease of golfing life on the European Senior Tour. She reveals their love for Holland, playing golf and meeting-up with old friends and enthuses about Paul’s unique way of coaching that’s different to the conventional way. “It’s much more hands-off”, she says. And finally, Sharon gives some canny tips on how to be a good caddy. All in all, an inspiration!
