The world’s best golfers gather for 125th US Open
American Bryson DeChambeau is excited to be at the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, USA today for the start of the prestigeous US Open (12-15 June) which he won in fine fashion last year in a tremendous tussle for a narrow one-shot victory over Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy.
The US Open is the third Major of the season and not surprisingly the world’s best golfers are present in Pennsylvania all looking to snatch the trophy. Thirty-six year old Masters winner Rory McIlroy will be in search of yet another Major victory. But the ultimate question is after his successes in 2020 and 2024 can Bryson DeChambeau win the US Open for a third time?
Competition is going to be pretty hot in the 125th US Open this year. Talent includes the World Number One, Scottie Scheffler (USA), who won the US PGA last month. World Number Two Rory McIlroy and the numbers three and four from America Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa will also be showing their skills. Indeed, Schauffele scooped his first two Majors last year when he dominated the golf scene by winning the PGA Championship and the Open.
If you’re looking to follow Rory McIlroy then he tees-off from the 10th tee at 07.40, local time, with England’s Justin Rose, who McIlroy beat in a play-off in the Masters earlier this year, and Shane Lowry (Ireland). However, if Bryson DeChambeau fascinates you then you’ll catch him on the first hole playing with fellow-American Xander Schauffele and Spain’s 21-year old US Amateur Champion and now first time player in the US Open Jose Luis Ballester at 07.29, local time.
Interestingly Oakmont Country Club has hosted a record number of ten US Opens which is three times more than any other club. And if you’re wondering who won the first US Open here, well, I can tell you that that was Tommy Armour way back in 1927. The last winner here was American Dustin Johnson in 2016. Indeed, the first ever winner of the US Open was Horace Rawlins at the Newport GC in 1895. Now that is enough history for the moment. Let’s get back to the present.
Welcome to the 125th US Open at Oakmont CC. It is going to be a thrilling few days simply oozing with talent!
