A never ending feast of Sunday sport …
Sunday, 12th July 2015 at 10.00 am. It’s going to be a long day today. A very long day. In London, and on television in millions of homes around the world, tennis stars Roger Federer and Novac Djokovic will be seen battling it out at Wimbledon in the Men’s Finals this afternoon. Live coverage on the BBC starts at 15.00 hours, Amsterdam time.
Around a set later, Holland’s number one golfer, Joost Luiten, who is currently ranked 56th in the world, will tee off in the Scottish Open in the chasing pack. He is showing great form after opening with rounds of 71-63-66 for a score of 10-under par and lies in a share of 3rd place going into the final round with a real chance of lifting the title.
Alas, due to the clash with Wimbledon, there is no live coverage from the Gullane golf links on the BBC this year. Night owls will, however, be able to enjoy a one-hour highlights package on the beeb 40-minutes after midnight. Alas, I’m not sure that we’re going to last that long!
To be honest, just how much sporting splendour and excitement can one take on a Sunday afternoon? And then, not just any Sunday. Today is the second Sunday of Wimbledon. Yes, we’re coming to the end of a most exquisite and spectacular two weeks of Wimbledon tennis which culminated in the “Serena Slam” on Saturday. Even the mixed doubles event has hotted up this year with the return of Martina Hingis who is going for the “double double” today having won the Women’s Doubles yesterday.
At the age of 34, Roger Federer is heading for his 8th Wimbledon title. Should world number one and defending champion Novac Djokovic win, then that would be Wimbledon crown number three for the 28-year old Serb.
Let all the day’s play on grass begin. And may the best players win!
