A golfing fairy tale

Dame Laura Davies celebrates her birthday today. The golf legend and English maiden of 52 golf seasons, remains a force to be reckoned with within the professional ranks. Indeed, the golfing fairy tale of the long-hitting lady continues.

 

2015 was another special golf season for Laura as she celebrated thirty years as a professional golfer. She joined the Ladies European Tour (L.E.T.) in 1985 and shot to fame directly as Rookie of the Year and Order of Merit winner. Four years later, she became the first player to win one million pounds on the L.E.T. In fact, to sum it up, Laura has smashed records all her golfing life from colossal long-driving distances to course records of 62 and 63 and, naturally, she has lifted umpteen trophies and titles worldwide. At last count, the tally was 79 singles victories in her professional career alone.

 

She has an amazing track-record in the Solheim Cup. In fact, she holds the Solheim Cup record.  In 12 appearances for Europe, she has earned a record of 25 points. It was only the last two of the bi-annual encounters with America that she narrowly-missed making the team.

 

In 1988, Laura was awarded the MBE and in 2000 the MBE in recognition of her services to the game of golf. After a visit to Buckingham Palace in October 2014, life was never to be the same again. On the tee: Dame Laura Davies! She was further honoured a few months later when she became the first of seven female honorary members of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
