Fond memories of “the voice of golf”

Whilst enjoying the British Masters at Woburn this week, it has brought back sweet memories of Alex Hay.  One wonders whether the former Scottish golf professional, who became “the voice of golf” with Peter Alliss on BBC television, is fondly looking down on his old club where he became club professional in 1977 and then later Managing Director.

 

Alex Hay and Peter Alliss, what a joyful duo they were together. During the BBC’s golf coverage, Alex, with his lovely Scottish brogue, would so often be reduced to a heap of giggles after one of Peter’s whitty moments of wisdom. Their friendly banter and charismatic humour was an inspiration to television golf commentary and enjoyed by millions for 26 years (1978-2004).

 

After a seven year absence, it is rather ironic that the British Masters should be resurrected with the help of a new sponsor at Woburn. The club in Milton Keynes, incidentally, hosts the tournament for the 17th time. However, this year, the event will not be screened on BBC television. Why? The clue lies in the new title: “The British Masters supported by Sky Sports”.  That’s golf!
